Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro 6/128GB

Let’s start with the ninth generation Redmi Note manufactured by Xiaomi, and the reader may even experience some cognitive dissonance from the combination of the Pro set-top box and the most affordable price in the review. In fact, everything is simple here. The Redmi series, by definition, belongs to the budget segment, unlike Mi, and the model itself is by no means a novelty. All this allows you to purchase this quite good smartphone at a more than affordable price at the end of 2020.

The main characteristic of the screen, namely, the type of matrix, many will immediately consider a disadvantage. Indeed, in the age of the victorious march of OLED technology in smartphones, IPS can already be considered obsolete technology even by objective criteria. Nevertheless, in this smartphone, the matrix is ​​​​quite high-quality and not the cheapest. In addition, there is still an impressive proportion of users who really prefer IPS, and some do not recognize OLED screens at all, especially in the case of obvious PWM flicker.

The screen size in this model is 6.67, and with this size the smartphone justifies the Note prefix in the name. Resolution — extended FullHD 2400×1080 with a pixel density of 395 at 20:9 aspect ratio. The dimensions of the smartphone correspond to the diagonal of the screen — 76.68×165.75×8.8 mm, the weight is also “not a fluff” — 209 g. The weight is partly due to Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both sides and a capacious 5020 mAh battery.

The cameras in this smartphone are quite commendable. The rear block is four-component: the main camera is 64 megapixels; 8 megapixel ultra wide-angle; a 5 megapixel macro module and a scene depth sensor with the most common resolution of 2 megapixels. It is worth emphasizing that the macro camera with a resolution of exactly 5 megapixels, and not 2 megapixels, as in most models of the same price category, is also equipped with autofocus. The front camera is also quite powerful — 16 megapixels with intelligent background blur.

Performance in this model also has a twist, and it is expressed in the processor. Here it is Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G with eight cores. The key point is the letter G at the series index. In this case, it is short for Gaming and means the presence of a more productive Adreno 618 graphics module, which is approximately 15% more productive than a modification of the same mobile processor, but without the G index. Other performance factors are 6 GB of fast RAM, 128 GB of internal memory, and plus more card reader up to 512 GB.

HONOR 20 6/128GB

The next interesting smartphone in this rather narrow price category is a product from Huawei, namely the model of the independent brand HONOR. The HONOR 20 model was announced in 2019, and due to the fact that a relatively long time has passed, and at the end of 2020, a smartphone can be bought at an affordable price.

The screen here measures 6.26 diagonally while the device measures 73.97×154.25×7.87 mm. Let’s pay your attention to the thickness — only 7.87 mm, this is really one of the thinnest smartphones on the market. The matrix here is also IPS, like the previous model, and in this case, judging by the reviews. users do not particularly complain about this circumstance. Matrix resolution — 2340×1080, pixel density — 412 per inch, aspect ratio — 19.5:9.

It so «historically happened» that Huawei smartphones in the coming years demonstrate unprecedented success in terms of photography. This applies to both Huawei brand smartphones and the HONOR sub-brand. In this model, the rear camera block consists of four elements. Some of them are questionable in terms of expediency, but this is a fairly common marketing trend.

So, the main camera of the rear unit here has a sensor resolution of 48 megapixels and is equipped with Ai-stabilization; wide-angle lens with a resolution of 16 megapixels with correction of characteristic geometric distortions; 2 MP macro camera and 2 MP scene depth sensor. Actually, it is precisely the macro camera that raises doubts about the appropriateness, since objectively macro photos are better obtained with a wide-angle cropped lens. The front camera in this model is more than powerful — 32 megapixels, for many not very cheap smartphones, even the main camera can have such a resolution.

The performance of this model is based on the HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor on eight cores with the Mali-G76 MP10 graphics subsystem. The second performance factor is a significant amount of 6 GB of RAM, and most importantly, high speeds of up to 21 GB / s. The amount of internal memory is 128 GB.

The battery in this smartphone is not as impressive as in the previous model — 3750 mAh, but this capacity is calculated quite accurately taking into account the power consumption of the smartphone. In the music listening mode, the smartphone can work up to 130 hours in a row.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 6/128GB

Another Xiaomi smartphone in our review, and now it will be Mi, not Redmi, but still quite inexpensive, since it is still a «light» Lite version. It was released in the current 2020 almost along with the new flagship Mi 10.

The screen of this model is straight, not curved, as in Mi Note 10 Lite, 6.57 inches in size, AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 2400×1080, high detail due to a pixel density of 401 per inch. There are some questions about the matrix, since although it is AMOLED, it is quite budgetary. The image quality is more than decent, but the brightness margin is not too large.

If there can be objective comments on the screen, then the cameras here are quite up to par, as for this price category. So, four lenses are placed on the back side: a 48 megapixel main camera, an 8 megapixel ultra wide camera, a 2 megapixel macro module and a 2 megapixel scene depth sensor. The highest-resolution main camera plays the main role here, and it is often tangibly assisted by the ultra-wide-angle module. The front camera with a 16 megapixel sensor resolution provides high-quality selfies in sufficient light.

The meaning of the depth sensor in 2020 is already dubious for many reasons, and the macro camera is by and large superfluous here. But such marketing excesses are not even particularly worth blaming the manufacturer, since the fashion for “multi-camera” still dictates its own terms.

The smartphone’s performance is more than decent for a «diet flagship» as it is sometimes called. Processor — Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 5G with Adreno 620 graphics. 6 GB RAM, 128 GB built-in memory. A slot for memory cards is not provided, and this can already create discomfort for active users of multimedia content.

The set of means of communication at this model is noteworthy. So, there is a super progressive Snapdragon X52 modem with 5G support. Considering that before the mass distribution of 5G networks, we still have to wait at least a few years, this feature is more decorative. However, its presence entailed a secondary benefit for potential buyers of this model — the operation of a smartphone in a 4G network environment is implemented in a truly high-quality manner. Communication is stable, speeds and sensitivity are excellent. Pleased with the presence of Bluetooth 5.1, NFC and infrared port.

HUAWEI Nova 5T

The next smartphone at a price of less than 30 thousand rubles is a product of HUAWEI, which bears its own name. The Nova line has been out for a few years now, with the Nova 5T announced last year in 2019. The characteristics are generally similar to neighboring models, but there are some noticeable pluses.

Smartphone dimensions — 73.97×154.25×7.87 mm. The screen and body are protected by tempered glass with anti-scratch properties. The screen size is 6.26 inches diagonally. Here, the manufacturer did not try to keep up with the flagships of 2019 and installed an IPS matrix with FullHD + 2340×1080 resolution. The dot density is 412 per inch, the screen aspect ratio is 19.5:9. The matrix is ​​of high quality with rich colors, a good margin of brightness, you can safely use it outdoors in daylight, and only in direct sunlight will the smartphone have problems with image visibility.

The rear camera unit consists of four lenses: a 48 megapixel main camera, a 16 megapixel wide-angle lens, a 2 megapixel macro lens, and a 2 megapixel depth sensor. It is easy to guess that only the main camera and the wide-angle “drag” the quality of the pictures here. Macro is practically useless. Surprisingly powerful front camera — 32 megapixel resolution and good algorithms for intelligent background blur.

The specificity of this model is that a set of tools has been introduced here to ensure high-quality sound. There is a separate and rather large audience of users for whom this moment is almost of fundamental importance. The manufacturer did not fork out for a full-fledged stereo pair, but the system speaker is really good, loud, with a large margin of adjustment without distortion. The microphones are equipped with high-quality noise reduction, so that the user’s interlocutor also receives a kind of «secondary benefit» in the form of good audibility and purity of communication. Unfortunately, the manufacturer «did not save» the standard 3.5 mm headphone jack in this model, but carefully equipped the smartphone with an appropriate adapter.

The HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor is responsible for quite good performance in this model, it is quite powerful and energy efficient, created according to the super-progressive 7-nanometer technology. The RAM is 6 GB, built-in — 128 GB. No card reader provided. There is a new generation Bluetooth 5.0, an NFC module, a dual-band Wi-Fi module.

Realme 7 Pro 8/128GB

Next, consider a smartphone brand Realme, which is successfully promoted by the Chinese technology giant BBK. It promotes so successfully that the brand is rightly considered one of the fastest growing in this market segment. Quite objectively, since under the Realme brand there are really good smartphones at attractive prices.

The screen in this «budget flagship», as it is sometimes called, is SuperAMOLED and quite high quality. The picture, as befits this technology, is extremely naturalistic, the brightness margin is more than decent — at the peak it reaches 600 nits.

The screen diagonal here is 6.4 inches, the screen resolution is 2400×1080 pixels. Given the 20:9 aspect ratio, the pixel density here is sufficient to not notice individual pixels at all — 411 dpi. The screen frequency is the most common — 60 Hz, for an increased hertz, there would inevitably be an increase in price due to an increase in cost. There is an analogue of the Always-On Display function. The screen size is 74.3×160.9×8.7 mm, the weight of the smartphone is 182 g. The case is plastic, but stylish and looking quite solid.

The electronics control center in this model is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G gaming processor. Recall that the letter G in this single-chip system means “Gaming”, and the Adreno 618 graphics subsystem functions on average 15% more productively in games and other applications, where most of the system resources are spent on processing three-dimensional graphics. The amount of RAM is the largest compared to the nearest other models — 8 GB, built-in storage — 128 GB, and flash cards up to 256 GB are also supported.

The cameras in this smartphone are not to say that they are outstanding, but they are sufficient for ordinary daytime shooting. The rear unit is made up of a 64 megapixel main camera, an 8 GB ultra wide-angle camera, a portrait camera and a macro camera. The front lens is also powerful with a sensor resolution of as much as 32 megapixels.

With communications in this model, too, everything is quite good. It has a new advanced Bluetooth 5.1 module, dual-band Wi-Fi with excellent stable connectivity, comprehensive support for 4G standards, and more.

Autonomous operation of the smartphone is provided by a fairly powerful battery with a capacity of 4500 mAh. There is a fast charging function, a special SuperDart 65W charger is included. The Power Delivery feature allows you to use your smartphone as a power bank.

HONOR 30S 8/128GB

Another HONOR smartphone will complete the selection, this time one generation newer than the HONOR 20 described above, but with the S index, which indicates a number of restrictions in favor of a more affordable price. This is a new model, so Google services are not officially provided here.

In terms of performance in this model, there were no compromises. Here is the latest Hisilicon Kirin 985 5G single-chip system on eight cores with a frequency of 2580 MHz and progressive Mali-G77 MP8 graphics. There is plenty of RAM for this class — 8 GB, built-in storage — 128 GB. Unfortunately, there is no card reader, but there is support for NM (Nano Memory) memory.

The set of rear cameras here consists of four camera modules. Leading module — 64 megapixels with autofocus, but without optical stabilization; wide-angle 8 megapixels; a macro module of 2 megapixels and a scene depth sensor are also 2 megapixels. Despite the fact that this whole scheme seems to be solid, in fact, only the main lens and wide-angle actually have practical meaning. By default, the main camera shoots in the mode of combining four pixels into one. If desired, you can turn it off, and get a «clean» 64 megapixels. The picture quality is good, but nothing more. The front camera is powerful — 32 megapixels.

On some resources you can find a description, they say this smartphone has an OLED matrix installed. In fact, the older version without the S index received an advanced matrix, and in the younger one we still see LTPS (one of the variations of IPS technology). This is quite a minus, since the smartphone is not so cheap, and users rightly expect a modern OLED screen from such models. The screen resolution is 2400×1080. The screen has a diagonal size of 6.53 inches. The pixels are distributed at a density of 403 per inch.

The battery in this smartphone is very capacious — 4000 mAh, equipped with an express charging function. On a full charge, the device can work up to 30 hours of talk time. Full charge time in express mode is 1 hour.

In general, the conclusions from this model are positive. The most noticeable compromise is the IPS screen, and you will have to put up with this, since the electronic platform is sub-flagship, and the cameras, although not top-end, at least fully correspond to the level of the device.

The best smartphones for about 30 thousand rubles

In the second selection of the review of the best smartphones priced up to 30,000 rubles, we will consider models that cost exactly that amount or a little more. We deliberately make a small assumption in the direction of rising prices, since in the near future any of the models presented may become cheaper enough to fully meet the review criteria.

OPPO Reno 3 8/128GB

Let’s start with the so-called «oppophone», as the smartphones of the Chinese brand OPPO are half-seriously called. The brand belongs to a large holding BBK, which owns several other well-known brands, including the same Realme, which has been actively promoted lately.

This model combines obvious compromises with quite worthy characteristics. So, for example, the body of the smartphone is plastic, but nicely stylized. Dimensions — 73.3×160.2×7.9 mm, weight — 170 g. Screen diagonal — 6.4 inches, AMOLED matrix, of sufficient quality, with a good margin of brightness. The resolution is 2400×1080, aspect ratio is 20:9, which together gives a density of 411 dots per inch.

The camera configuration is remarkable in itself, and in practice it shows very good results. The rear unit consists of a main camera of 48 megapixels and other modules — 13, 8 and 2 megapixels. This kit is capable of decent quality shooting, optimally with sufficient daylight. In terms of evening shooting, the capabilities are no longer the same as those of the flagships, but they are also much higher than the budget options — the Ultra Night mode helps the smartphone to cope with this, but it requires the smartphone to be mounted on a tripod for complete immobility. The front camera in this model is one of the champions in resolution with its 44 megapixels. Shoots quickly, accurately, sharply and with high quality. The main camera can shoot video in 4K resolution 3840×2160 at 60 fps.

Now about performance. It has an 8-core MediaTek Helio P90 processor with a PowerVR GM9446 graphics module. The combination of RAM and internal memory is 8 and 128 GB, respectively, and it is still possible to use memory cards with a capacity of up to 256 GB.

The communication capabilities of the smartphone are quite ordinary, except for the presence of an NFC short-range wireless communication module. Until relatively recently, this popular and highly demanded contactless payment tool was a relative rarity, and at the end of 2020 it is already found in so many new models.

The battery here is quite capacious — 4025 mAh, in moderate mode it can provide two days of work. There is a fast charging function Oppo VOOC 3.0, and it is really fast — from full discharge to 100%, the battery is charged in an hour, even a little less.

Samsung Galaxy A71 6/128GB

The second number will draw your attention to a representative of a wide range of Galaxy smartphones manufactured by Samsung. It will, of course, not be a flagship, but a model of the popular mid-price A series. The Samsung Galaxy A71 has earned the loyalty of the audience thanks to balanced characteristics, a good screen, and even such a secondary moment as the thickness of the case.

Let’s start with thickness. The dimensions of the smartphone case are 76×163.6×7.7 mm, and as of the end of 2020, among more or less new smartphones, this is one of the best indicators in the world in terms of the maximum thinness of the case. Device weight — 179 g.

The smartphone is equipped with a high-quality screen with an AMOLED matrix. Resolution 2400×1080 — with a screen size of 6.7 inches and aspect ratio of 20:9, a pixel density of 393 per inch is achieved. The image is characterized by a high margin of brightness, excellent contrast and deep, natural blacks.

A good camera configuration is that rare case when the macro camera and the depth sensor receive not 2 megapixel sensors, as in most modern smartphones, but 5 megapixels each. The remaining camera modules of the rear unit are the main module with a resolution of 64 megapixels and a 12 megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. Optical stabilization is not provided, only autofocus on the main camera. The front camera is powerful and sensitive, with a resolution of 32 megapixels. Another plus of the multimedia part is the presence of a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack “minijack”.

The performance of electronics is provided by a good eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 processor. This is the series in which Qualcomm Aqstic technology is already present — a built-in digital-to-analog converter, an amplifier, a set of codecs for wireless transmission of high-resolution audio. The amount of RAM is 6 GB, the built-in storage is 128 GB. There is a card reader that supports large cards up to 512 GB, a dedicated slot.

The set of interfaces in this model is more than acceptable, as for the mainstream model at the end of 2020. There is dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 (aptX, aptX HD, LDAC codecs are supported), an NFC module, multilateral support for LTE bands and bands, all navigation systems, including Galileo.

Finally, the developers have taken care of the decent battery life of the smartphone. The battery here has a capacity of 4500 mAh, which lasts up to two days in normal ordinary use. The fast charging function allows you to quickly charge your smartphone in the first half an hour by a third, and 100% in an hour and a half.

Samsung Galaxy M51

Let’s start a little non-standard — with a battery, and this makes sense, since the Koreans here decided to break all records. The battery capacity here is a completely insane 7000 mAh, which is not even close to being able to demonstrate any of the closest competitive smartphones in this price category. The kit comes with a 25W charging block, through which express charging is carried out. Independent tests have shown that with such a battery, a smartphone in listening to music mode can operate without interruption for up to 182 hours, watching videos with the screen at maximum brightness — up to 34 hours. In 30 minutes of express charging, the battery is filled from zero to about a third.

Now for the rest of the features. The screen diagonal is 6.7 inches. The screen is equipped with a high-quality SuperAMOLED Plus matrix with excellent color reproduction and a resolution of 2400 × 1080. With such a diagonal, the dimensions of the case are 76.3×163.9×9.5 mm, and the weight is 213 g.

The configuration and characteristics of the cameras in the Samsung Galaxy M51 may seem ordinary compared to many other models, but this is only at first glance. The rear unit consists of four modules: a 64 megapixel main lens, a 12 megapixel wide-angle lens, a 5 megapixel macro camera and a 5 megapixel depth sensor. It’s that rare late 2020 where a macro camera makes sense. But this is also not the main thing, and the main thing is that the rear camera unit copes very well with evening shooting, delighting with really spectacular shots. This is one of the key differences between a flagship and a simpler smartphone. The front camera here is also more than on the level — 32 megapixel resolution with a number of software add-ons to improve shooting.

It is also worth noting the decent performance of the device, which is provided by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G gaming processor. It is gaming because the integrated graphics subsystem Adreno 618 is specially “sharpened” for working with three-dimensional graphics, and in modern games the video card shows an average of 15% higher performance. Actually, the index G in the name of the processor means «Gaming».

HONOR 30 8/128GB

Now consider the third HONOR smartphone in our review, it will be a more advanced version than the HONOR 30S described above, but more modest than the top-end and much more expensive Honor 30 Pro+. A solid midrange HONOR 30 with well-balanced features.

The dimensions of the smartphone are 74.18×160.34×8.47 mm, weight is 185 g. The case is covered with protective glass on both sides. The rear camera block noticeably sticks out above the surface, but so far this is more of a norm than a drawback. Available in two colors — black and emerald. The frames around the screen are not too intrusive, but there are: 2 mm on the sides, 5 mm at the bottom and 3 mm at the top. The screen here measures 6.53 inches diagonally, equipped with an OLED screen with a resolution of 2400×1080, which at 20:9 aspect ratio provides a high density of 403 dots per inch.

The set of cameras deserves really high marks. The rear unit consists of the following components: main camera with a resolution of 40 megapixels with an RYYB color filter; wide-angle lens with 8 megapixel sensor; telephoto with a fivefold optical zoom and optical stabilization; 2 megapixel macro camera Front camera — 32 megapixels resolution. The quality of the pictures, if it does not cause a wow effect, then certainly deserves respect, including evening shooting.

A separate topic is performance. Here, Huawei really tried and did not stint. The processor is a powerful eight-core Hisilicon Kirin 985 5G with Mali-G77 MP8 graphics. 8 GB of RAM is good in itself, but memory speed is much more important. And here it reaches an amazing value for this price category of 28,000 MB / s — this is really a flagship indicator. Built-in memory provides 128 GB. Unfortunately there is no card reader.

The communication capabilities of the smartphone are also more than sufficient – ​​remember, there is even support for 5G, which is nice, even though there is still nowhere to take full advantage of this innovative technology. There is an NFC module, but given the lack of Google services, for the normal operation of contactless payment, you will have to make some additions to the software.

The battery in this model is properly calibrated to the energy needs of the device. Capacity 4000 mAh is enough for 30 hours of talk time, 20 hours of video playback, up to 7 hours of gaming. There is a fast charging function.

Realme X3 Superzoom 8/128GB

Rating: 4.8

Once again, Expertology specialists did not bypass such a new and bright trademark as Realme. Now we will consider a special model, which is aimed at those who need high smartphone capabilities in terms of photography for a reasonable price.

To begin with, let’s give dry numbers of camera indicators. The rear unit is made up of the following components: the main wide-angle camera with a resolution of 64 megapixels; 8 megapixel ultra wide-angle; 8 megapixel telephoto and 2 megapixel macro camera. Behind these figures is an interesting and sometimes even outstanding «substrate».

The fact is that this optical scheme uses the so-called periscope lens (we are talking about an 8 megapixel telephoto lens) with a fivefold increase. Please note that this does not mean a retractable camera unit, as manufacturers sometimes do for the front camera of a smartphone in order to avoid cutouts and holes in the active space of the screen matrix.

This refers to the use of a system of lenses and prisms according to the principle as it is organized in the periscopes of real submarines. Such a system needs less free space and due to this it turns out to keep the minimally thin profile of the device. In addition, thanks to a focal length of 124 mm, magnification up to 60x can be achieved using digital algorithms. Here, the built-in optical stabilization will help the user, but you still need a tripod for such shooting. However, the result of both daytime and evening photos of such efforts is definitely worth it. On the rear camera, you can record video in 4K quality at 60 fps.

Now let’s touch on other aspects of the characteristics of this model. The body dimensions are 75.8×163.8×8.9 mm, the smartphone itself is quite weighty — 202 g. The screen is 6.6 inches in size with a resolution of 2400×1080 and a pixel density of 399 per inch. Matrix part of the audience may be disappointing, as here IPS, not AMOLED. But in fact, this is a minimal drawback, since the matrix itself is of high quality, and possible «moral» costs are fully compensated by an increased hertz. The screen refresh rate here is 120 Hz, and it’s worth a lot.

The processor here is top-end at the time of model development — Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus on eight cores with Adreno 640 graphics. 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of internal storage. There is no support for memory cards.

The battery in the smartphone is slightly more capacious than in the previous solution — 4200 mAh, which is good, since the consumption here is noticeably higher — the IPS screen and increased hertz affect. There is a fast charging function.

Huawei P30 6/128GB

Rating: 4.9

The review will be completed by the most, perhaps, interesting model among all those considered. This is already a real flagship without any conventions, although not a top one, since the top smartphone in the same series is the same P30, but with the Pro prefix. In addition to the impressive technical specifications of the electronics, this model deserves attention for its elegant slim body.

Huawei P30 is a real find for those who appreciate the minimalist elegance that Apple periodically accustoms us to with its “airy” gadgets.
