What do they look like
Right after the release, Freebuds 3 were available in white and black, but we were lucky — a novelty arrived in the editorial office in a new bright red color. The headphones have a compact round case with a magnetic lid, made of glossy plastic. It was made using two coats of paint and a UV coating for long lasting color.
The case will most likely show minor scratches over time, but over the course of a couple of weeks of the test period, we only noticed fingerprints that quickly cover the glossy case.
The headphones themselves are securely magnetized on the charging pad inside the case – if anything, they won’t fall out. Perhaps we will not compare the entire review FreeBuds 3 with AirPods. Yes, they are similar, but in fairness — all modern wireless earbuds are similar to each other, and Apple’s only fault is that they were one of the first.
How they sit
Each earbud weighs only 4.5g and is barely felt in the ears. However, everyone’s ears are different, so if you have the opportunity to try on the headphones before buying, we advise you not to neglect it.
Sound, microphone and noise reduction
The headphones are equipped with 14.2 mm drivers and separate bass tubes. For signal transmission, the device uses the modern Bluetooth 5.1 standard with BLE support and 356 MHz audio processing technology. Also responsible for the sound quality is the Kirin A1 processor, which helps the microphones recognize background noise; and a vibration sensor, with which the headphones recognize your voice and amplify it.
In practice, all these technologies provide a stable connection between headphones and a smartphone and clear voice over the phone. You can answer calls right on a busy street, and not look for a secluded corner for a conversation.
When it comes to music, the HUAWEI FreeBuds 3 are one of the few headphones we couldn’t find fault with. And this is taking into account the compact form factor, in which, in principle, it is difficult to use a large driver and some design sophistication.
Freebuds have a very balanced sound, with bass, mids, and highs evenly expressed. In compositions with many soundtracks, not like David Bowie — Under Pressure, details are not lost, and «heavy» hits like AC / DC — Highway to Hell sound very rich.
AI Life App
All headphone functions can be configured in a fairly simple AI Life app. It is offered to be downloaded via a QR code, which you will find in the box with the device. There are versions not only for Google Play, but also for HUAWEI’s proprietary App Gallery. You can add all smart devices from the manufacturer that you have to the program.
On the main screen, in the tab with the headphones, the level of their charge will be shown — it is convenient that the battery of the case is also taken into account. Interestingly, when working with HUAWEI smartphones, both headphones will be discharged evenly. This is achieved through dual channel technology — smartphones based on EMUI 10 synchronously transmit a signal to both headphones, and not in turn (first to the right, and then to the left).
Another feature available to fans of the Chinese brand is the function of determining the position of the device. Simply put, if you remove the headphones, playback will stop, and when you return them to your ears, it will start again. Since we tested Freebuds 3 specifically with a HUAWEI smartphone, this feature worked flawlessly.
Also in the AI Life app, you can adjust the controls and noise reduction. Both earbuds support double-tapping to switch tracks, activate the voice assistant, or enable/disable noise canceling. The headset does not notice light taps — so it is very difficult to accidentally pause the music if you hit your ear.
Noise reduction is adjusted using a circular slider — depending on the surrounding sounds, the intensity of their filtering will change. As practice has shown, it is enough to set it up once so that the noise canceler remembers the set parameters.
Charging and working time
The earphones can be charged both wired (using the USB-C connector here) and wirelessly using a charging station. Of course, it’s faster from a standard charger — with such charging, 6 W power is used, while with wireless it is only 2 W.
In half an hour at the outlet, the case was charged by 70%, and the headphones by 95%. It’s pretty fast. A fully charged case will last for four headset charging cycles.
On a single charge, the headphones will last about 4 hours in playback mode — enough for several trips to the subway or air travel. However, the run time also depends on the volume and whether you use noise cancellation. With the noise reduction turned on, the gadget will be discharged a little faster.
Should I buy HUAWEI FreeBuds 3 TWS headphones
If you appreciate good sound and like earbuds more than earplugs, you will definitely like Freebuds 3. They last a long time on a single charge, have a sensitive microphone for talking on the phone and look stylish. You should not count on complete isolation from external noise — after all, these are small earbuds, not full-size headphones. Also, the buyer may be confused by the price of the device — about 10,000 rubles. But, as you know, you have to pay for quality, so all that remains is to accept that good headphones cannot be cheap.
