How to Connect Two PCs without Router

I have to admit, though I’m techno savvy than most member of my family, there comes a time when I’m also a noob (read: newbie) when it comes to new technology. Though I have had replaced my PCs several times and purchased several laptops, I have never felt the need to connect both PCs or laptop to PC directly since I always utilized by portable hard drive.

Anyways, our PCs in our office were connected through a network and I can see that they were using Network Cables to do the job. I thought connecting two PCs were as easy as just plugging in a network cable on both PC’s network card. Wrong! Tried to do that but I couldn’t get it to work. It turns out that you need a CAT5 cross over to temporarily connect your two PCs directly and transfer files. Remember: there are a lot of network cables available but what you need specifically is the CAT5 RJ48 cross over cable (remember that word: cross over), otherwise you’ll be stuck with an ordinary Ethernet cable that won’t do you much good.

I was able to connect both my PCs easily as both hard drives are FAT32 though some say that if one is FAT32 and the other is NTFS, they won’t be able to recognize each other. Well, that’s another matter that I’ll research on once I get to that bridge but for now, problem solved.
