Do you really need internet in your car?
As if drivers need another reason not to pay attention to the road, do you really need internet connection in your car? Chrysler has already announced earlier this year, I think it was in June, of their UConnect service that will turn Chrysler’s cars into a WiFi hotspot. Actually, with just a mobile phone in hand, you can already have internet access in your car thanks to 3G connections.
You don’t actually need expensive equipment, just plug in your 3G phone to your laptop and then use your phone as a modem and that’s it. Before 3G, having internet in your car means you’re stuck with satellite internet. While satellite internet isn’t bad, the equipment needed to install one in your car can be very expensive. I know a techno savvy friend who was able to install satellite internet on his RV using HughesNet service. Back then, having access to the internet while you’re traveling was totally cool. Plus, with satellite internet, you can be virtually connected anywhere, unlike with mobile internet wherein, let’s face it, not all areas have cellphone signals.
On an RV, internet access may be a good idea if it’s only limited to the passengers. However, car manufacturers instead of focusing their attention on keeping drivers distracted should just focus their time in making more safe cars.
